Nikon D90 Tips and Tricks!

So now that the D90 has been out for a couple of years I’m sure some of you have some great tips and tricks up your sleeve! I thought it might be a good time for you all to add some helpful tips and tricks for others to try with their D90.

Just post them in the comments and let’s see what we end up with.

A couple of my favorites that I use a lot are:

Reformatting the disk: Holding down the two buttons at the same time for a couple of seconds then hitting them again and your scan card is all formatted back to blank. I do this every time I’m done downloading my photos to my computer.

Auto-FP High Speed Sync is another feature I use a lot….This allows you to use faster shutter speeds with flash….No longer stuck using the limited 1/200 shutter speed with flash. Now you can use whatever shutter speed you want with your speed flash.

So come on share your tips and tricks….

I leave the metering on Matrix as it usually does a good job, but I have the user-definable function button set so that when I hold it in it changes the metering to spot. This way I can fire off two shots using each metering method very quickly for those times when I suspect spot may be a better choice.

I didn't learn this feature for a while, but I love the fact that I can preview and change my white balance through the view finder on the fly!

A good way to preview the WB is in live view mode. Check to see if it's what you want then make adjustments as necessary. I use this function a lot when Auto WB isn't working. Also, a good reminder is to use a grey card and use custom WB.

I love HDR. A tip for full automatic HDR's. Set your bracketing (-2, 0, +2), then go to the self timer menu and choose 3 frames, set it to a 2 sec. (or more) delay. Activate the multi picture self timer...... presto, 3 frames usable for HDR.

What i love about the NIKON D90 is the Commander Mode. Hook up an off camera flash wirelessly using the Commander mode. Its pretty stinking cool.

Help, why can't I use my flash. I here it click when I try to open it, but nothing happens. Do I have something set wrong?

Scbbbc said...

Hello Ann, Sorry your having problems with your flash..But from your question I'm not sure I understand exactly whats going on..could you be more specific and maybe someone on here can help...

Ann, check your MODE DIAL. If it's in AUTO, it will not open when you push the FLASH button. Rotate the button to P, then push the flash button to see if it pops open.

I like to use "fill flash" at times but the flash only fires when it thinks it needs to...?
How can I set it to fire every time?

What is the recommended sd card to use my d90?

Scbbbc said...

Maria, SD memory cards. like scandisk, Toshiba, panasonic and lexar are all tested and approved for the D90.

I think it depends on what mode your camera is in. If it's in Auto, it will only flash when it thinks it needs to, but if you're in Manual, it should flash when you're telling it to. Make sense?
