"All in one" Walk around Lenses for the Nikon D90!

Do you own an all in one lens? That’s one lens that does it all! A lens that covers everything from wide landscapes to zoomed in close-ups of wildlife and sports. I’ve never even tried one on my D90 yet but I’m thinking about getting one soon…I guess the true term of these lenses is a walk around lens. Not having to constantly change lenses in certain situations might be nice at times…

I know specific individual lens take better images for what they are made for so I’ll always keep them available. But some days just walking around it might be nice to just have one lens that can do it all. We all know about or heard of the Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR. This seemed to be the one everyone gets. I believe there is a newer version that came out also. So the price might have come down a bit on the original. I’ve always read great reviews on this lens but for me I was hoping for something a little longer then 200mm. I’ve been reading a lot about the New Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens. This lens won the EISA 2011-2012 best product award and seems to be what I’m looking for! Actually Tamron makes two of these lenses, the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC is a little older but still gets good reviews…..

Do any of you have or shoot either of these lenses? Or any suggestions for me?

I use the Nikon 18-200 on my D90 and found it a great lens to use while away on 2 recent holidays overseas!

I have the 18-200 Nikon VRII, it is the first lens i got with my D90 purchase and was the only one i used for 2 years.

It is a fantastic lens, capable of producing nice images.

I love it for when i go on holidays and don't want to change lenses while walking around.

You risk missing a photo opportunity or something interesting happening while you are fiddling around with lenses.

However, holidaying is the only time i use the 18-200 now days.

I have a combination of mid range/tele zoom and prime lenses.

The 18-105 that came with my D-90 is really spot on. The only thing I'd really like it to do better is take macro. I suppose having something wider would be nice once in a while, and obviously having a large 300-400mm fast lens would be nice, but I took that ONE lens to China and was quite happy with its performance.

I rather the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 but that's just my own opinion...

it is a great lens. I have it on my D90 all the time , it only gets changed out if I need a specific lens for a job Macro for instance.
For an all in one lens on a nikon body I don't think it can be bettered.

I had the random 18-270 and liked it with the exception of 2 things. Itwas prone to getting dust inside the lens chamber. went through 2 of these and both ended up with dust inside are a few months use.

It's apparently down to the vat amounts of air it sucks in when zooming!

Also the amount of lens creep was crazy but that's kind of expected with such a large zoom

Great lens shame about the build quality!

@Rebecca, For your music and wedding you should try the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens. Not the new one but the older one...I love mine!

I use the 18-105 (a brilliant all-round lens and the 70-300. Both are VR. The longer lens is not quite so crisp at full stretch but is excellent up to 250 ish.

I use the 18-200 VR2, the VR 1 had anoying lens creep... works great on the D7000 as well...

I usually have my 18-105mm on my D90. It's a wonder wrapped in plastic. For some occasions i use my 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D ED.

I'm still looking for a good replacement for my good old 50mm F2.0 Ai. Now that was a great walk-around lens!

I like the 16-85. The 7 additional degrees at the wide end more than make up for the 9 degrees I give up at the narrow end. And if I need a longer lens, my 70-300 VR is almost always nearby.

I have the 18-200 on my D90. I shoot alot of indoor sports especially volley and it doesnt seem to be fast enough. Any recommendations on lens that won't cost too much but can do the job?

You need a fast lens for this and most cost a ton. A lot of people suggest the 50mm 1.8 lens, Nikon's least expensive lens. I personally have a couple of friends that use it for all their kids indoor sports.
